About Me

Hi!

Who am I?

I’m RyanE, and I write Control4 drivers.  I also write Control4 4Store Apps from time to time, and have been known to write CGIs and Control4 tools.

I’ve had an automated home for 15+ years, currently implemented with Control4.

Why Untested Hacks?

Hack n. or v.:  (Urban Dictionary)

1. (n.) A clever or elegant technical accomplishment, especially one with a playful or prankish bent. A clever routine in a computer program, especially one which uses tools for purposes other than those for which they were intended, might be considered a hack.

2. (v.) To jury-rig or improvise something inelegant but effective, usually as a temporary solution to a problem.

This website is just a hack; I’m going to go back and put some real code in later.

Untested?  Well, I’m sure you can figure that part out.  If you can’t, it means:

  • No warranty
  • No support
  • If it breaks, you get to keep all the pieces
  • If it messes up your Control4 system, that’s too bad.

What’s included?  What’s not?

Hacks on this site do NOT include (and will NOT include):

  • How to obtain ComposerPro without becoming / working for a Control4 dealer
  • How to ‘DIY’ your Control4 installation
  • How to obtain free licenses to Control4 services

I don’t consider these hacks in the true sense of the word, so don’t ask.

RyanE

  1. I’m considering putting a Control 4 system in a new house. I currently have a Vantage Q-Link system that I have written software (in c#) for that lets me monitor events and initiate commands through the serial port connected to my own web server. I want to understand if I can do something similar with Control 4. Ideally I’d be able to do it all through HTTP Requests rather than a serial interface. I have been having a really hard time finding information on how access a Control 4 system at this level. Installers/dealers seem to have no clue what I’m even talking about.

In your Web Events Driver I see you talk about control 4 “Commands”. Is there documentation on what these “Commands” look like? Is there anyway to have the control 4 system post to my web server when events happen like motions, light status changes, or buttons are pushed?

In general, is there an SDK or documentation that would discuss accessing the system as this level?

    • I suggest you post this question on C4Forums.com. There are a lot of people on there who would answer their opinions on this, and will notice it a lot faster than I do comments here.

      Sorry.

  3. Hi. Any software to create a fully customised home screen and subscreens for iOS?

Not happy with the standard app as it includes too many options that do not apply to my installation.

Also I want to add a logo.

    Any thoughts?

  6. Hello RyanE. I work for I work for a distributor/manufacturer of electronic security/surveillance products and are interested in getting control4 drivers written that will allow a few of the NVRs and/or DVRs we carry to integrate with Control4’s home automation systems.

if you can help me with this and would like to discuss further, please get in touch. Thank you.

  7. Hi
I am looking for some help on creating a simple driver to control a tp-link managed switch.

I need to create Vlans, and remove Vlans as I am pleased.
a bit like the Cisco and Netgear drivers used on the Just Add power solution, but simpler.

If I can have a command in Control4 that logins to the switch and creates a VLAN, I can then learn from there and achieve what I need.

Could;d you point me in the right direction for a script that will login (telnet) in LUA to the switch and do such thing?

If there is a cost to this work, please let me know as I will be happy to discuss
please feel free to email me.

    Thanks

  8. I would like some help in building a Control 4 driver from scratch, I am already a programmer so just a little assistance with the Control4 API etc.. would be very much appreciated.

The new Control4 driver for the BSkyB Sky+HD box is a c4z file which means I am unable to add any IR Macros into the driver like I could with the older c4i file. e.g. Enter PIN CODE. Also BSkyB now have an iPhone app which integrates with the Sky+HD box via IP and I would like to exploit this to add a whole load of extra functionality to the Sky+HD driver e.g. TV Guide listings and also the list of recordings on the box in the Control4 interface.

  9. Ryan, I am a Level 2 tech from AV Upgrades in NC. I like all good integrators have a budget hacked together system and came across an hc800 with no ssd card. Do you possibly know how to properly image one of these to set the file system to recognize the usb install or restore stick? I have tried everything I could think of. Tech support doesn’t assist with this level of user service. Any help appreciated. Thank You. I may dual post this on the C4 Public forums. -Michael
